She declined the Annie Jump Cannon award in — a prize that honours the research achievements of women astronomers. She argued that gender-based awards keep women from fair recognition.

This act of rebellion spurred the creation of the Committee on the Status of Women in Astronomy, which encourages women into the field and promotes their work within it. Rather, he believed that they are comparatively nearby objects. In , with Hoyle, he proposed that they were perhaps only three to 30 million light years from our galaxy and not the three billion light years or more that is generally accepted.

In he even bet one eminent British astronomer a bottle of champagne that he was right. Despite the appearance of some evidence buttressing Burbidge's opinion, the consensus now is that he was wrong. But he was never daunted by going against the tide, and in , with four other astronomers, he took on the theory of the Big Bang itself. He published his attack on the generally accepted theory on the birth of the universe in the journal Nature , promoting instead a concept based on Hoyle's so-called "steady state" concept of an eternal universe.

Rather than a "Big Bang" unleashing a giant wave of energy at the very beginning of time, Burbidge argued in favour of a series of local "small bangs" occurring once every 20 billion years or so. As with his quasar theory, Burbidge failed to convince the wider world of cosmologists. But to the end of his life he remained convinced of his correctness, estimating that it would take a "very long time" for his minority view to win over the "heavy bias" of the majority opinion. Burbidge was director of the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Tucson, Arizona, from until , when he moved to the University of California, San Diego, as professor of astronomy.
